The University of Kansas Health System

As Senior Website Coordinator at the health system, social media is a large part of my job. In addition to other digital communication responsibilities, I implement social strategies while developing and managing editorial calendars. I help provide social media coverage of hospital related events and develop/share content . I also train staff, including executives and communications leaders, in the effective use of social media, specifically LinkedIn and Twitter, to help increase the hospital’s social media presence and the effectiveness of posts shared.

Managing the social media efforts for the Sports Medicine and Performance Center at the health system, my objective is to position the service line as the acknowledged place to go in the Kansas City region for sports medicine.

In a span of two years:

  • Increased Twitter followers by more than 400 percent
  • Created more than 500 videos used for social (and website) purposes
  • Utilized social media to drive traffic to the service line website increasing visits by more than 47 percent

Louie has taken the challenge of growing and developing the social medial platform for our sports medicine service line. He introduced new concepts and strategies carefully and with patient explanation to decision makers who are unfamiliar with this technology and not always comfortable with it. He started small, gained the confidence of our team and gradually increased our reach. I say this because he has the ability to read people, get them out of their comfort zone and achieve the strategic vision.
— Charles Rozanski, Vice President, Orthopedics and Sports Medicine
Louie has been very courteous, positive, professional and always has new ideas and strategies as we formulate our social media plans for sporting events. He is always prepared and comes to the table with a winning, thought-out plan. While Louie’s professional skills are rock solid, I believe it is his energizing personality and character that sets him apart.
— Steve Kennett, Program Director - Professional Sports and Special Events

Human resources/recruiting

I often attend new employee orientations and interview staff in an effort to help recruit more god employees. During these events, I share “whiteboard” photos and videos of new employees touting their reasons for joining the organization.

In December 2015, leadership at the health system asked me to manage the social media efforts for the organizations Human Resources/Recruiting department. Management had acknowledged an issue filling current positions and retaining employees in a variety of positions and I was asked to help. I created and implemented a reorganized, focused and dedicated social media strategy aimed at promoting the culture, benefits (both personally and monetary) and opportunities – all while telling the truly great stories of the work current employees do and showcasing them on the various channels.

I am a Senior Recruiter in HR and work with Louie when it comes to the social media aspect of our recruiting efforts. I appreciate that Louie is able to take an idea and develop it into a great post to help us promote our open positions. He is creative and easy to work with. I wouldn’t be able to do it without him!
— Gina Salazar, Senior Recruiter
Louie has been very helpful assisting the recruitment team on updating our LinkedIn and social media accounts as well as helping us share career opportunities. We greatly appreciate the time and energy that Louie puts into helping our recruitment efforts.

The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), headquartered in Kansas City, Mo., is a governing body of  small athletics programs that are dedicated to ‘character-driven intercollegiate athletics.’ As stated on the organizations official website, “since 1937, the NAIA has administered programs
and championships in proper balance with the overall college educational experience.” The student-athlete and their experiences while involved in his or her respective schools and universities are at the center of everything the NAIA stands for and represents.

For my final project in the Social Media Marketing and Communications course I took in graduate school, I created a social media plan for the NAIA focused on three objectives:

  • Organize and refocus current social media use
  • Tell the student/athlete stories
  • grow the audience

See the NAIA social media plan here.
